HELMUT LANG

1956
Vienna
Truly self-taught, he launched into fashion at the age of 23.
His boutique opens in Vienna in 1986.
He presents his first collection and his brand the same year.
Helmut Lang is one of the first to make asexual clothing.
He brings men & women together by parading them during his "working sessions". Disposable paper dresses parade in 1991.
He meets with great commercial success after settling in New York in 1997.
In 1998, he sells his collection only on the Internet. Guests could access it by a CD. The next year, his collection is presented ahead of the official calendar of the FW.
He had a real influence on the anti-fashion and minimalism movements of the 1990s.
Simple silhouettes, colors reduced to black, white, beige and a work with metallic materials or fashion accessories make his signature.
He is sometimes compared to Japanese designers Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo for the conceptual approach to his clothes.
His "worked" jeans covered in paint, make him a trendsetter.
In 1999, he sold the shares of his company to the Prada Group in order to devote himself to the creation of his clothes.
A few years later, Prada sells the brand.
Since then, Helmut Lang has devoted himself to art and sculpture.
