DIOR
1946
Paris
Founded by fashion designer Christian Dior with the financial participation of Marcel
Broussac,
the eponymous company was born in 1946 at 30 avenue Montaigne in Paris at a
private mansion.
In 1947, Christian Dior paraded for the first time and counted Pierre Cardin, the
leading tailor among his teams.
Coming out of the war years, this first collection revolutionized the codes of
femininity and fashion.
Nicknamed the "New Look,” it redesigned the female silhouette, the Bar suit being a
flagship model. In addition, he launched a perfume company in the same year.
Miss Dior was the first limited-edition fragrance.
He launched his first ready-to-wear creations in the United States in 1948, he
opened Christian Dior New York Inc. and used radio and television to make himself
known.
After that, he became world-famous, notably by dressing Marlene Dietrich and
Marylin Monroe.
Yves Saint Laurent took over the artistic direction after the death of Christian Dior in
1957.
Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and recently Maria
Grazia Chiuri, all successfully took up the position of artistic director.
Today, Christian Dior Couture belongs to LVMH.
